Eureka Releases and Updates

New features are incorporated into Eureka on a continuous integration / continuous deployment basis. As enhancements are incorporated into Eureka, current Eureka users are notified and details are included in the Release Notes, below.

Eureka v4.0 - January 12, 2023

  • Updated from Centos 7 to Ubuntu 22.04

  • Swapped out NoMachine for Apache Guacamole

July 12, 2021

Updates available in new Eureka App-VM instances or upon Instance Owner request:

  • Enabled Software Collections repository

  • Updated monitoring and logging agents

  • Automated CentOS patching

  • Enabled internet access CLI; Added help screen to GUI

  • Created sets of TMPDIR for R clients to resolve common user problem when building R packages

  • Introduced script to improve installation of Anaconda packages

  • Provided an easy installation file for SAS. Please contact Compass to obtain sudo permissions required to complete installation

App VM Version 3.0: July 20, 2020

Features:

  • Limited internet access! Time limited access to pre-defined URLs will be enabled on the Eureka App VM. Details on what URLs are included can be found here. Note that the mirrored Bioconductor Repository will be going away with this release. If you are on a Eureka v2 instance, you will need to be upgraded a v3 instance.

App VM Version 2.0: December 12, 2019

Features:

  • Redesigned Eureka connection to be accessible entirely as a web-based login solution.

  • Nightly backups of Eureka App VM images in case disaster recovery is needed.

App VM Version 1.6: September 2, 2019

Features:

  • Access to local mirror of the Anaconda repository within Eureka; updated daily. Release is no longer available because of unstable updates to Anaconda.

  • Access to local mirror of the PiPy repository within Eureka; updated daily. Release is no longer available because of a change with the storage of the repository on Cloud Storage.

App VM Version 1.5: August 18, 2019

  • Updated version of R from 3.5 to 3.6.

App VM Version 1.4: July 15, 2019

Features:

  • Access to local mirror of the Bioconductor repository within Eureka; updated daily.

  • Local mirror of CRAN repository within Eureka updated daily.

App VM Version 1.3: May 21, 2019

  • Automatically shut down idle VM after 20mins. This helps ensure users are not charged when the VMs are not being used.

App VM Version 1.1: December 20, 2018

  • Access to local mirror of the CRAN repository within Eureka

  • Preinstall SAS (version 9.4) on Eureka Linux VMs (at User request)

App VM Version 1.0: Initial Release. October 1, 2018

Features:

  • Approval for PHI-containing datasets from all Compass partner institutions

  • CentOS 7-based VMs, with both console and GUI (Gnome Desktop) access

  • CPUs and RAM from any combination available on Google Cloud Platform

  • Initial suite of open source data science and software development packages preinstalled

  • Users can start and shut down VMs on demand

v1 Known Bugs:

  • Bug: New Eureka VMs must be logged into, then rebooted, before VNC connections can be made.

HPC Version 1.0: November 5, 2020
